Rena's Guide to Outdoor Recreation:

From the Perspective of a First-time Visitor to Colorado

As a first-time visitor to Colorado, there are a great many surprises awaiting you on the road to adventure. Some of these surprises are fun and some could be hazardous to your health. This web site is designed to help first-time visitors avoid some frequent misadventures and enjoy some of the "natural" pleasure that Colorado has to offer.

My first visit to Colorado was in the summer of 1992. Coming from New Orleans, which is below sea level, there were many surprises awaiting me that I could not prepare for. I thought I had adequately planned  my first trip to the mountains by reading up on some key facts such as layering your clothes to prepare for changes in temperature, always have a rain jacket due to brief, unexpected thunder storms, and drink plenty of water because the air in Colorado is thin and the humidity is low.

Some of the unexpected surprises came in the form of elevation, altitude sickness, torturous mountain roads and scenic byways, and towns on the map that weren't towns at all. Some towns, such as Bedrock, are just a store with a mobile home parked behind it. It's a mixed bag of pleasant experiences and misadventures. Being informed and prepared are key factors to any vacation.
